Bold, bright accent colors can be used in many exterior painting situations. For example, to highlight architectural features, to add visual appeal to large commercial buildings, for corporate branding purposes, and more.
Here are four tips for long-lasting results…
4 Tips For Accent Colors
1. Prep it properly
As high as 80% of all coating failures can be directly attributed to inadequate surface preparation. Therefore, selection and implementation of the proper surface prep helps ensure coating success and prolongs the service life of the coating system.
2. Cover well
How many coats is enough? Typically, with dark colors I would use two coats of the topcoat to get satisfactory film build and improve overall final color, durability and touch-up. Important: Follow recoat times as described on data pages.
3. Choose the right coating for the job
Each job is different. Ask yourself: What type of resin will work best – acrylic, alkyd, urethane? Could a clear UV-resistant coating over our waterborne acrylic to extend the service life?
Whether you’re a pro or a novice painter, you don’t need to know all the answers about painting – just the right questions to ask.
4. Aim for long-lasting results
Finally, ask: Which coating solution is going to give my customer the best long-term value? If you’re considering a lower-cost coating, ask: “What performance characteristics am I sacrificing for price?” It is always wise to be sure you are comparing “like” products from different manufacturers.
Accent colors bottom line: Don’t skimp on quality
You can sometimes “get by” with satisfactory results when using inferior products. However, the best-quality finish will be achieved with the use of the appropriate premium primer (if needed) and finish.
There are reasons why some paints are a lot less expensive than others. Therefore, pro painters understand the value of quality exterior paint and the outcome of their projects speaks volumes about their abilities.
