Jobsite safety is crucial on the job. This includes protection from bad air quality. Therefore, its important to emphasize jobsite safety to both employees and clients. Here are some air quality and respiratory safety tips…
Jobsite safety to help your crew stay safe
Two questions to ask yourself:
- Are your periodic respiratory medical evaluations up-to-date to ensure there are no underlying cardiac or respiratory issues that could affect a crew member’s ability to wear a respirator?
- Are all respirator fit tests current? Check with your local safety equipment vendor to schedule a fit test. This service is usually provided for free.
Then a thorough review of the scope of the job will help ensure that you have the proper safety eyewear, hearing protection, respirators and other personal protective equipment (PPE) you need. Create a PPE checklist to make sure you have all your bases covered prior to starting a project. Assign a team safety leader if possible. This will emphasize the importance of safety within your company.
Help manage customer expectations
- Whether you’re using water-based or solvent-borne coating, it’s good to remind your customers of the importance of adequate ventilation. When possible, opening windows and doors or using other means to ensure fresh air entry during application and drying will help everyone stay more comfortable. It will also optimize work productivity.
- Odor is subjective, so a strong smell to one person may be negligible to another. For example, for occupied buildings, suggesting project scheduling that minimizes direct contact with occupants is a good way to reduce odor complaints. Also, it will improve productivity on the job.
