The best way to paint over dark colors is to use the proper system. Also, don’t skip a step! You lose time & money the moment you cut corners. Therefore, it’s important to do it right the first time.
For example, someone recently asked me this question…
Question: What is the best primer and paint system to paint over dark colors?
The answer may vary depending on your situation. However, the answer I provided can be used as a general rule of thumb.
Answer: For interior drywall walls that are in sound shape, a primer may not be needed. Of course, that also depends on the quality and sheen of the existing finish, and how dark the existing color is.
If in sound, clean condition and the existing product is a satin to flat finish, apply a premium interior acrylic latex paint in a matte or flat finish. I typically use two coats anytime I paint my walls. Additionally, premium paints tend to have excellent hide if applied as directed using quality applicators.
If the existing sheen is semi-gloss to gloss, and the surface is in sound, clean condition, I would use a multi-purpose latex primer, then finish with your topcoat choice.
Paint Over Dark Colors: Bottom Line
The proper paint system achieves the best results. Therefore, analyze the condition of your walls. From there, make the best judgment and select the best system. Ensure to take the proper steps to complete project. Again, don’t skip a step. It’s not worth it. Time is your most valuable asset. Both you and your client will benefit from doing it right the first time.
